Call for Papers: 2012 Young Scholars Symposium
New Approaches to Art, Art History, and Visual Culture

Seeking to foster interaction between young scholars studying at undergraduate institution in the Greater Boston area, this symposium will bring together students from across the region to present their research on a diverse array of subjects relating to Art History, Visual Culture and their related contexts.

Papers can address a broad range of topics in art history and visual culture- including architectural history, urban planning, film studies, industrial + graphic design, fashion, illustration, animation, performance, graffiti, or any other form of visual communication.

A series of 15-minute presentations will be followed by opportunities for questions and discussion.

When: Saturday, April 14, 2012, 1:00 – 5:00 pm

List of Banned or Challenged Books

During the last week of September every year, hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The 2011 celebration of Banned Books Week will be held from September 24 through October 1. Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,000 books have been challenged since 1982. According to the American Library Association, there were 348 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2010, and many more go unreported.

Central Falls' Adams Memorial Library

Central Falls' Adams Memorial Library needs your help and is throwing one helluva party to prove it!

The library is a crucial institution that saw its city funding eliminated in the face of Central Falls' municipal fiscal meltdown at the beginning of summer.

Reopened by volunteers in August, the library is currently open to the public for 3 days a week. Volunteers not only provide library services, even purchasing books if they're not in stock, but also do things like vacuum the floors and scrub the sinks. It's not glamorous, but it's necessary.

Now the volunteers are looking to take things to the next level.

We're throwing a fundraiser on September 30, hoping to raise enough money to hire a library director and expand library hours.

The Adams Memorial Library Autumn Gala will feature live entertainment, open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres and fantastic silent auctions.

Bob Drouin & Friends are providing live music that will infuse the library with Traditional flavor. Crooner Steve Lombardi will fill the outside tents with his Rat Pack showmanship. Big Nazo and TEN31 Productions will bring their special brands of magic to the night. Tom's Market will provide heavy hors d'oeuvres while Bartending by Dennis will provide an open bar. Yep: open bar.

Add to that silent auctions that will feature the best of local merchants as well as special access to area artists and we're looking at one helluva night. The fun starts at 6:30PM.

Brown Validation Reader Cards

Earlier this year, a card-activated turnstile system was installed in Brown's Rockefeller Library. Only Brown ID card holders may enter through the turnstile without staff assistance. All RISD patrons (and other non-Brown ID holders) must register and then be buzzed in by library staff to enter the building.

To streamline this process, the Rockefeller Library is issueing validation reader cards to RISD users. These cards will enable RISD ID holders to swipe to get into the building without waiting. The cards will be issued at the Rockefeller Library only; however, they can be used at either the Rock or Sciences Library. In order to register for a card, a RISD patron would need to come to the Rock and receive a card. The cards will remain active for one year. They can't be used to check out books and do not have any identifying information.

You need to have an up-to-date RISD library record before getting this card. You can check the status of your RISD library record by logging into my record in the online catalog and checking your exp date. For directions see here. You can update your record at the Circulation desk or calling 709-5901.

On September 6, 2011, JSTOR announced that they are making journal content in JSTOR published prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. This “Early Journal Content” includes discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics and politics, and in mathematics and other sciences. It includes nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals. This represents 6% of the content on JSTOR.

Message from Rockefeller Library's Circulation Department - Effective Immediately

Please share the following information about the change in access to the Rockefeller Library at Brown with your staff and library patrons.

In an effort to improve building security, the exterior doors to the Rockefeller Library will be locked weekdays at 10:00 PM -- effectively immediately. Access will be restricted to those with valid Brown cards; users will swipe their cards at the front door to gain admission.

Please note that the same card-access schedule has been in place at the Sciences Library for the last few years.

We want to emphasize that we continue to welcome your students and faculties' use of the Brown libraries and hope that the change in access to the Rock will not have a serious negative impact on their usage of our resources.

Synopsis
How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags.

Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions.

There is no fee to receive an alumni card or to register for a RISD alumni library account.

Book in a Day

Print a small book edition in one day, combining text & image with hand printing & water based inks. Even if you have never made an image before, you will gain confi-dence and amaze yourself and your friends when you show off your very own book! Create and design your image, transfer the image, plan the printing sequence, carve a soft block, and print it by hand with a brayer and water based inks. Each letter of text will be set in rubber fonts. Collage elements will be encouraged.
All aspects of this green print shop can be recreated at home.
In this workshop, students will create an accordion book with text and images, and complete a small edition (up to 4 books). All materials will be provided (paper, type, soft blocks, brayers, inks, collage papers, Speedball carving tools).
Limited to 10 students, open ONLY to Brown and RISD undergraduates

Approximately 9,000 images of architecture, landscape design, and the built environment from the Society of Architectural Historians' (SAH) SAHARA project are now available in ARTstor. SAHARA (Society of Architectural Historians Architecture Resources Archive) is a community-built archive of digital images for teaching and research in the field of architectural history. SAH members, including scholars, architects, historic preservationists, and students, upload their own built environment images to SAHARA to be shared with the Society. The SAHARA collection in ARTstor consists of photographs that have been peer-reviewed by the SAHARA editorial board for their photographic quality and the accuracy of their descriptive information. Additional images will be added to the ARTstor Digital Library as the SAHARA archive grows over time.

This 13 vol. set is a comprehensive dictionary and encyclopedia covering all aspects of the Middle Ages (AD 500-1500). Entries vary from concise definitions of terms, to brief biographies of individuals, to in-depth topical essays. Bibliographies to further sources are included for each entry. 2. New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (REF. ML 100.N48 1992)
This 20 vol. set covers all aspects of the history of music, musicians, composers and instruments from earliest times to the 20th century. This 3 vol. biographical dictionary provides extensive entries for seventy five notable people involved in the creation of graphic novels. Coverage is international in scope. Vol. 1 begins with an overview of the individual schools offering programs in jewellery and metal-smithing (RISD of course, included). Entries for the designers are listed in alphabetical order. Each includes a photo of the artist, a brief cv and several color images of their designs.

8. Atlas of Fashion Designers (TT 507.E24 2008)
This volume highlights 69 of the top designers in fashion today representing 32 different nationalities. The coverage is truly international, reaching beyond the traditional fashion hubs of London, Paris, New York, and Milan. Each entry includes biographical information and several color images of each designer’s work. The entries also include a set of six questions which have been asked of each designer, and their response.

In Margot Nishimura's AH 102 Medieval Art History class yesterday there was a discussion about how to limit search results to articles in English in the online article databases.

Here are some tips:

In Art Full Text/ Art Retrospective there is a Language of Document field in the drop-down menu on the front search screen. The default for the menu is "smart search".

New database - Commercial Patterns Archive

CoPA Commercial Pattern Archive
The Commercial Pattern Archive database, CoPA, provides a unique tool for researchers and designers to recreate or date clothing from 1868 to 2000. There are several collections from the States, Canada and the UK represented in the database which functions like a Union Catalog of pattern collections. The cornerstone of CoPA is the Betty Williams Collection. Betty Williams, a theatrical costumer in New York City, pioneered research on commercial patterns in the early 1980s. She became a leader in the field, establishing a major personal pattern collection and encouraging others to actively participate in the collection and storage of patterns. Betty passed away in 1997 leaving a wealthy legacy of research, and an extensive pattern collection now housed at the University of Rhode Island. The Williams Collection is combined with the URI and Joy Spanabel Emery Collections in the Commercial Pattern Archive in URI Library Special Collections.

Architectural Drawings of RISD Buildings

RISD Archives (Fleet Library, 2nd floor) has a collection of 12,000 drawings (originals and copies) of RISD buildings. The drawings are indexed in a searchable Filemaker pro database by the following information: drawing title, document type, information about the creator(s) of the drawings, dates, building name, location, and type, number of sheets, scale, and a short descriptive note.

An overhead scanner allows Archives staff to provide copies as long as a CD, DVD, or USB device is provided. Students, faculty, and researches are welcome to use the collection by appointment.
