Fellowships & Residencies

What's the difference between a fellowship and a residency?

A fellowship is a nontaxable gift of money to support inquiry on the part of students in their field of interest and to provide for their educational expenses and for some or all of their living expenses.
Source: Greenwood Dictionary of Education

A residency is a specific allotment of time awarded to an applicant to complete a project that was probably clearly defined during the application process. Most residencies are served on the campus or grounds of a colony, foundation, university, art center, museum or estate. Good sources to start with include:

Buildings of Rhode Island

The PPS/AIAri guide to Providence architecture

Providence Preservation Society's guide to downtown Providence : commerce in architecture

National Register of Historic Places - Rhode Island

When looking for information on a neighborhood, search by keyword in the RISD/ATH catalog using the neighborhood's name and "providence".
Example: elmwood providence

The City of Providence website, Department of Planning & Development has Neighborhood Profiles for each of the city's 25 neighborhoods. These profiles include census data on popluation, diversity, and income. Also available are sidebar links to an aerial photo, and maps showing Land Use, City Wards, Diversity, Open Space/ Parks, Recreation, Public Facilities, and Service Providers. Historic Plat maps which show land division and ownership are available at City Hall Archives, 5th floor, room 502. 3-D Glasses & Images

Where can I find examples of 3-D images, the kind you view with 3-D glasses?

Begin by searching the RISD catalog by the keyword phrase, 3-D glasses. Looking at the subject headings in the Paris in 3-D book will lead to the subject, photography, stereoscopic. Three artists' books in Special Collections contain 3-D images & the glasses for viewing.

mystery fish appear in downtown Providence

Some folks who work at RISD Library have been looking down on the Providence River for a couple of weeks and have been amazed at the large schools of fish circling around in it. People who have been here since the 1980's don't ever remember seeing anything like it. Rumors are that they are bluefish that are being raised upstream to swim down into Narragansett Bay. Is this true? There is some disagreement as to what kind of fish they are.

There are schools of smaller fish which are menhaden, the food fish that attract bigger fish like bluefish and striped bass. Mixed in with the smaller fish are bluefish who apparently are following the menhaden upstream from the Bay. There are no bluefish being raised upriver, these are all coming up from the Bay.

Art Appraisers

How can I find out how much an artwork is worth?

We recommend that an independent appraiser be consulted to determine the value of a piece of art, an antique, or other object.
Keep in mind that appraisals are done for various reasons such as insurance, valuation, & provenance. Members of a professional appaisers association are to follow a code of ethics set forth by the organization.

Here are two national organizations who specialize in appraisals:
Appraisers Association of America
Art Dealers Association of America Art Appraisal Service

artnet.com and artprice.com are two commercial sites which offer art price information for a fee.

Price guides and auction catalogs are another source for finding art prices. Depending on your object, price guides may be available in print and online.

Book binding 101

I am looking for a book on basic book binding, specifically, a "Jacob's Ladder" book, and am not sure where to go.

There are several sources on this topic that might be helpful.

One source is "Making Books That Fly, Fold, Wrap, Hide, Pop Up, Twist & Turn: Books for Kids to Make" by Gwen Diehn. There is an adaptation of Diehn's Jacob's Ladder book by a teacher, Helen A. Thompson. Other books that Gwen Diehn has authored, mostly on decorating books, are held in the library.

A second resource is The Essential Guide to Making Handmade Books by Gabrielle Fox.

A third book is Creating Handmade Books by Alisa Golden.

Japanese Teahouses in the U.S.

I am researching Japanese teahouses that were built in Rhode Island - I read a column in the New Yorker by Lewis Mumford (10/2/1954) that discusses the 1954 Japanese House at MoMA, and he mentioned that some American missionaries, upon returning to the United States, built these Japanese-style houses in the late 19th C. Can you help me find more information about this?

The only additional resource that could be found is a reference to a Chinese teahouse built on the estate of a society woman, Alva Belmont, in Newport, RI.

The Newport Historical Society may have additional information about teahouses as well.

Lee Gatch

A public patron is researching the painter Lee Gatch.

The Maryland Art Source contains a short biography of Gatch and lists some resources.

The library has two books about Lee Gatch.

Articles can be found in Art Full Text / Art Retrospective.

Carl Van Vechten

A student needed to find information in books and journals about the photographer Carl Van Vechten. The RISD Library has quite a few results, including the following books:

The passionate observer : photographs by Carl Van Vechten / by Keith F. Davis

Generations in Black and white : photographs / by Carl Van Vechten from the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection ; edited by Rudolph P. Byrd

Portraits, the photography of Carl Van Vechten / compiled by Saul Mauriber

A search for articles found several sources in FirstSearch, by typing in "Carl Von Vechten" in the keyword field.

In addition, there is a selected bibliography by the Library of Congress.

Video Artist from Chile

I am looking for information about Diamela Eltit, a writer and videographer from Chile.

Academic Search Premier had several sources, mostly about Eltit as an author.

FirstSearch lists many sources.

Eltit also appears in the Internet Movie Database and if you type her name in Google, you can find images of her.

RISD Museum Object Information

How do I find information on works of art owned by the RISD Museum?

Begin by looking in the Handbook of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design located in the Reference section. The Museum owns over 84,000 objects; this handbook highlights only 290 of them.

RISD Museum exhibition catalogues are often thematic and feature objects from the RISD Museum's collection alongside works from other museum & private collections. Follow this link to an alphabetical list of all RISD Museum publications owned by the library. These exhibitions catalogues are another source for information on museum objects. Some of the exhibition catalogues contain indexes to the title of the artwork, artist's name, and RISD Museum registration number.

RISD Museum Object Registration System
The Museum's registrar assigns each work of art a unique series of numbers. Registration numbers look like this: 30.166. The first number corresponds to the year the work was acquired by the museum. The numbers following the decimal point refer to the work's order of accession within that year. Knowing the museum registration number of your object can help in locating it in an exhibition catalogue. Ask a librarian at the Reference Desk to access our searchable database of RISD objects in RISD Museum Exhibition Catalogs.

Searching For The Messiah

I am interested in finding a painting that is white on white or grey, of The Messiah.

The painting found is "In the Clouds of Heaven," by Harry Anderson, which was found on several sites, including Miracles of Jesus, and Pictures of Jesus 4 You, which also lists other paintings by Anderson.

Information on Harry Anderson was found on BPIB (Been Publishing, I'm Back).

Additional sources on Anderson can be found by searching the ARTbibliographies Modern database.

Providence Architect Edward Irving Nickerson

I'm looking for any information about Edward Irving Nickerson, a Providence architect during the 1800s.

The RISD Library has several books that contain information about him, Buildings of Rhode Island by William H. Jordy, The civic and architectural development of Providence, 1636-1950 by John Hutchins Cady, Providence : a citywide survey of historic resources by Wm. McKenzie Woodward, Edward F. Sanderson, PPS/AIAri guide to Providence architecture by Wm McKenzie Woodward, and in the American Institute of Architects quarterly bulletin.

An Academic Search Premier search found "Edward Irving Nickerson, F.A.I.A." by Isham, N. M. in the American Institute of Architects Quarterly Bulletin, 1908 Apr., v.9, p. 39, which we have in our library.

FirstSearch and Brown University Library's catalog Josiah both found "Grace Church Needs a Parish House" by John B. Anthony in Livermore & Knight Co.

Fantastic Architecture

A RISD alum wanted information about "fantastic architecture", specifically architectural drawings, the arrangement of columns, and inbuilt architecture. A search in the RISD Library, using the subject headings fantastic architecture, and visionary architecture produced results, as well as a search for the artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Coffin search

An undergraduate student was interested in finding information about modern American coffins, specifically their craft (not necessarily their production).

A search with "coffins" in the subject field, and "art" as a keyword in FirstSearch produced some of the following sources: "Caskets and Burial Vaults" in Federal Trade Commission from the Office of Consumer and Business Education, 1992 (8 p.); "Do-It-Yourself Coffins For Pets and People" and "Fancy Coffins to Make Yourself" in the series "Schiffer Book for Woodworkers." An Academic Search Premier search found "Willow Weaving Revival Finds Niche Market" by Sian Ellis in Farmers Weekly, 2/18/2005, v. 142, issue 7, which discusses willow coffins.

I am interested in finding information about Prescott Clarke, a Providence architect from the early 20th century.

His obituary can be found through the database Art Retrospective, in the journal Architectural Forum v. 66 (January 1937) p. sup56. A second source can be found through Academic Search Premier, in the Wall Street Journal - Eastern Edition; 5/24/2002, Vol. 239, Issue 102, pW12.

Tip:
*Prescott Clarke's name appears as "Prescotte" in Academic Search Premier.

Colonial Kiln Construction

I am looking for information about colonial kiln construction. The following sources were found that might be helpful:

-An initial search found the following source on the Middle Tennessee State website:

Greer, Georgeanna H.
Basic forms of historic pottery kilns which may be encountered in
the United States. In The Conference on Historic Site Archeology
Papers, 1978. Edited by Stanley South. Vol. 13, pp. 133-147.=20

3. Ceramics of the world : from 4000 B.C. to the present with editors Lorenzo Camusso and Sandro Bortone.

4. Early American folk pottery by Harold F. Guilland.

5. The history of American ceramics, 1607 to the present : from pipkins and bean pots to contemporary forms by Elaine Levin.

6. Redware : America's folk art pottery by Kevin McConnell.

Slave Trade Maps

I'm looking for maps of Africa relating to the slave trade. I would prefer maps in color and ones that look old. Digital images are ok if they can be enlarged for my visual presentation.

An advanced Google Image search using keywords "Atlantic slave trade Africa maps" and limited to full color, Large images brings up some source imagery.

Search for three artists

A public patron was interested in finding information about three artists: Robert Austin, Albert P. Fellows, and Coulton Waugh. Information about Robert Austin and Coulton Waugh can be found through Art Retrospective. Who Was Who in American Art contains information about all three artists. Further information can also be found in Hislor's Art Sales Index CD ROM.

Eva Peron

A student was thinking of researching Eva Peron for her final project. Her biography can be found at the Athenaeum: The Woman With the Whip: Eva Peron by Maria Flores. Articles can be found using Academic Search Premier.

Anna Jarvis, founder of Mother's Day

A student is interested in information about Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day, for her artist's book. The RISD Library has the book Consumer Rites: The Buying & Selling of American Holidays by Leigh Eric Schmidt. The Brown Library has Mother's day, ... official program by Anna Jarvis herself, and Encyclopedia Britannica Online has an article about her and how the holiday began. History of Industrial Design Patent Search

History of ID students have been given an object to research. Some students are coming in with the patent number of the object. The primary source for patent information is the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Also, try searching Google Patents. The USPTO site covers 1790-present. Patents issued within the past few days are included. Google Patents does not include patents issued within the past 6 months.
A great print source for the history of designed objects is the 3-volume reference set, Phaidon Design Classics.

For more information, view this tutorial on how to search the US Patent & Trademark website.

Tip: Print Preview patent drawings-many of the image files are too large to fit on a single page.
