Top Reference Books 2009

1. Dictionary of the Middle Ages (REF. D 114.D526)
This 13 vol. set is a comprehensive dictionary and encyclopedia covering all aspects of the Middle Ages (AD 500-1500). Entries vary from concise definitions of terms, to brief biographies of individuals, to in-depth topical essays. Bibliographies to further sources are included for each entry. Volume 13 is a detailed index to the set. Maps and black and white illustrations supplement the text.

2. New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (REF. ML 100.N48 1992)
This 20 vol. set covers all aspects of the history of music, musicians, composers and instruments from earliest times to the 20th century. The coverage is international in scope and topical entries are in-depth. Each entry is accompanied by bibliographies, many of which are extensive. The set is liberally illustrated with black and white illustrations.

3. Grove Encyclopedia of Islamic Art and Architecture (REF. N 6260.G75 2009)
This 3 vol. set covers 14 centuries of Islamic art and architecture, from the rise of Islam in the 7th century to the present day. Covers all countries where Islam had an influence, including southern Europe, northern Africa, and west, central and south Asia. The information has been drawn from the original 34 vol. Dictionary of Art to make it more readily accessible, but has also been enhanced to reflect new scholarship in the field. Entries are scholarly, in-depth, and accompanied by bibliographies, as well as many illustrations, maps and some plans. Each volume includes a section of color plates.

4. Grove Encyclopedia of Materials and Techniques (REF. N 8510.G76 2008)
This encyclopedia provides concise definitions as well as in-depth coverage and history of materials and methods used by artists from ancient times through the 21st century. It is a helpful guide for understanding the properties of artists’ materials. Images and bibliographies are included.

5. U-X-L Graphic Novelists (REF. NC 1305.P46 2007)
This 3 vol. biographical dictionary provides extensive entries for seventy five notable people involved in the creation of graphic novels. Coverage is international in scope. Each entry provides an in-depth biography, a list of the creator’s best known works with the year published, examples of their work and bibliographies which include websites in addition to articles and books for further sources of information.

6. Korean Motifs (REF. NK 1484.6.A1K67 1986)
This 10 vol. set is a visual inspiration of pattern designs which may be applied in myriad ways. The designs are divided thematically: v.1. Geometric patterns--v.2. Floral patterns--v.3. Tokkaebi (sprites)--v.4. Cloud patterns--v.5.Yin and Yang patterns--v.6. Lotus patterns--v.7. Dragons--v.8. Vine patterns--v.9. Masks--v.10. Trees. Though the designs are representative of Asian patterns, they truly are universal in nature and would appeal to designers in general.

7. The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers, 2008 (REF. NK 7300.7.C6 2009)
This mammoth 2 vol. set is a visual feast of 21st century jewellery design. The work of 1,044 contemporary designers from 54 different countries is highlighted. Vol. 1 begins with an overview of the individual schools offering programs in jewellery and metal-smithing (RISD of course, included). Entries for the designers are listed in alphabetical order. Each includes a photo of the artist, a brief cv and several color images of their designs.

8. Atlas of Fashion Designers (TT 507.E24 2008)
This volume highlights 69 of the top designers in fashion today representing 32 different nationalities. The coverage is truly international, reaching beyond the traditional fashion hubs of London, Paris, New York, and Milan. Each entry includes biographical information and several color images of each designer’s work. The entries also include a set of six questions which have been asked of each designer, and their response.
