Books + Prints Sale 10 am – 4 pm October 12, 2013 Browse through a fascinating selection of used books and prints on display in front of 15 West (or inside the RISD library, if the weather doesn’t cooperate). Proceeds from the sale support the acquisition of new items for the library’s collection.

Library Online Catalog Down for Updates on Wednesday

Update: upgrades down last night when the library was closed. Online catalog is working.

The Library online catalog will be down for updates tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb 15 from 8:30 am to 10:30 am.

Central Falls' Adams Memorial Library

Central Falls' Adams Memorial Library needs your help and is throwing one helluva party to prove it!

The library is a crucial institution that saw its city funding eliminated in the face of Central Falls' municipal fiscal meltdown at the beginning of summer.

Reopened by volunteers in August, the library is currently open to the public for 3 days a week. Volunteers not only provide library services, even purchasing books if they're not in stock, but also do things like vacuum the floors and scrub the sinks. It's not glamorous, but it's necessary.

Now the volunteers are looking to take things to the next level.

We're throwing a fundraiser on September 30, hoping to raise enough money to hire a library director and expand library hours.

The Adams Memorial Library Autumn Gala will feature live entertainment, open bar, heavy hors d'oeuvres and fantastic silent auctions.

Bob Drouin & Friends are providing live music that will infuse the library with Traditional flavor. Crooner Steve Lombardi will fill the outside tents with his Rat Pack showmanship. Big Nazo and TEN31 Productions will bring their special brands of magic to the night. Tom's Market will provide heavy hors d'oeuvres while Bartending by Dennis will provide an open bar. Yep: open bar.

Add to that silent auctions that will feature the best of local merchants as well as special access to area artists and we're looking at one helluva night. The fun starts at 6:30PM.

Early Journal Content on JSTOR, Free to Anyone in World

On September 6, 2011, JSTOR announced that they are making journal content in JSTOR published prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. This “Early Journal Content” includes discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics and politics, and in mathematics and other sciences. It includes nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals. This represents 6% of the content on JSTOR.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art has launched a digital archive of their exhibition catalogs called reading room. Currently this collection consists of 10 catalogs mostly from the 1960s. More to come in April 2010.

From Information to Story: Visual Narratives Inspired by Special Collections

WHO: Anyone interested in books, art, design, or telling stories

Presenting the work of RISD graduate students in graphic design,
inspired by their explorations in special collections, and created
for professor Bethany Johns' Visual Narratives course. Twelve
stunning 3-panel poster projects and the student artists who
created them will be introduced by professor Johns and Richard
Ring, Special Collections Librarian.

April 23: Ann Harleman (English Dept) will read from her new novel, THE YEAR SHE DISAPPEARED, at the North Kingstown Library, 7:00pm. The book--"the harrowing adventures of a woman who abducts her endangered granddaughter and goes into hiding"--is set in Rhode Island.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs has placed a Better World Books donation boxes inside the Benefit Street entrance to College Building, at the Met, and on the first floor of 15 Westminster. Better World sponsors book drives on college campuses to fund and support literacy initiatives around the world. The books collected at RISD will be used for an African literacy initiative.The books will be collected on May 23rd so please contribute your recently published textbooks to this worthy cause! How do I find if RISD Library subscribes to a particular journal or magazine?

You'll need to check two places:
For print holdings, search by the journal's title in the RISD catalog.
For electronic holdings, search E-journals
An alphabetical title list is available in the library's Featured Collections.

Tip: Keep in mind that the RISD Library Periodicals Featured List contains current and retrospective periodical holdings. Call (709-5902)or stop by the reference desk to ask a librarian if you need clarification.

Athenaeum Borrowing for RISD Students

What types of items can RISD students check out from the Athenaeum Library?

Fulltime RISD students, degree program faculty and staff may borrow up to 5 items from the Athenaeum on their RISD Library account. Students may not borrow DVDS or ATH Music CDs, but may borrow VHS and ATH Classical Music CDs. If they wish, students may purchase a separate student account ($30, good for a year) at the Athenaeum which would include DVD and ATH Music CDs borrowing.

Videos and DVDs circulate for 1 week; audio recordings for 2 weeks and most books for 4 weeks. Exceptions are new Mystery or Fiction titles and Special Permission books which circulate for 2 weeks.
