Discover the world’s great art on Art.sy Richard Byrne writes: “Art.sy is a new site that has indexed thousands of works of art that you can view online. It allows you to browse for artworks according to medium, style, subject matter, movement, or region in which the art is produced. Once you’ve found an artwork that you like, Art.sy helps you find more by suggesting related works. Europeana

Europeana is a single access point to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records that have been digitised throughout Europe. It is an authoritative source of information coming from European cultural and scientific institutions. On September 12, 2012 Europeana opened "up data about all 20 million of the items it holds under the CC0 rights waiver. This means that anyone can reuse the data for any purpose - whether using it to build applications to bring cultural content to new audiences in new ways, or analysing it to improve our understanding of Europe's cultural and intellectual history." Early Journal Content on JSTOR, Free to Anyone in World

On September 6, 2011, JSTOR announced that they are making journal content in JSTOR published prior to 1923 in the United States and prior to 1870 elsewhere freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. This “Early Journal Content” includes discourse and scholarship in the arts and humanities, economics and politics, and in mathematics and other sciences. It includes nearly 500,000 articles from more than 200 journals. This represents 6% of the content on JSTOR.

City of Providence Independence Trail - follow the Green Line

The City of Providence recently unveiled its newest historical attribute.


It's a three-mile long trail marked by a green line painted on the sidewalk that includes stops at 75 different historical locations.

"It's a circle. It goes from Memorial Boulevard to Roger Williams Baptist Church, to the Old State House, the new State House, down onto Capitol Center, to Kennedy Plaza, through the Financial District to where Lincoln spoke..." said Trail Founder Robert Burke.

Desert of Forbidden Love film screening

Synopsis
How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags.

Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions.

The New York Public Library recently launched a new Map Rectifier website that works in conjunction with maps in its Digital Gallery. The site allows zooming, panning, and georectification—a process that allows digital images to be stretched, placing the maps themselves into their geographic context. Once a historical map has been digitally warped, users can virtually “trace” features, such as cities, farm boundaries, rivers, ponds, and even buildings, converting them into digital geospatial data....

Los Angeles County Museum of Art has launched a digital archive of their exhibition catalogs called reading room. Currently this collection consists of 10 catalogs mostly from the 1960s. More to come in April 2010.

From Information to Story: Visual Narratives Inspired by Special Collections

WHO: Anyone interested in books, art, design, or telling stories
with pictures!

WHAT: Exhibition, opened with commentary, and a reception with
light refreshments.


Presenting the work of RISD graduate students in graphic design,
inspired by their explorations in special collections, and created
for professor Bethany Johns' Visual Narratives course. Twelve
stunning 3-panel poster projects and the student artists who
created them will be introduced by professor Johns and Richard
Ring, Special Collections Librarian.

Concept Mapping a Research Topic

Concept mapping was developed in the 1970s and first used in the sciences. Concept mapping is a visual approach to developing one's thinking on a topic. This tutorial applies concept mapping to library research. Mapping a topic as the initial step in the research process will help to articulate questions, gather vocabulary, and uncover related facets of a topic. Use these questions, terminology and related terms when searching RISD Library's online subscription databases and the web.
